The Bishop family is said to have its roots in Holland. As tradition has it Thomas and Claborn were sons of Dutch immigrants. According to Hugh Joel Bishop Sr ., Thomas and Claborn's father may have been a Jim (James) Bishop . Thomas Bishop was born in South Carolina in 1800. Thomas had settled in Pike County Georgia by 1827, near the Pike/Upson County line in the community called Jugtown.

The nearest town is Meansville, approximately 5 miles to the north. Thomaston is some 8 miles to the south. In the 1850 census Thomas is listed as a farmer, but he is said to have been one of the first potters in the Jugtown community. Gravesite is between Shiloh Baptist Church and the store in the curve. Thomas is in an unmarked grave on the left side of the road coming north on 19 from Thomaston.
