Martin J. Deponai was born in Alsace Lorraine France in April 1838, and was a descendant of Madame Louise Florence d'Eplnay a noted French writer. Martin came to the United States in 1859 and at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army. He served with the 127th New York Volunteers until the 2nd battle of Bull Run when he was severely wounded having taken a bullet through his right lung. He remained in the hospital for 16 months and on recovery was assigned to duty in Washington DC. In 1869 he married Miss Mary A. Von Ruhl. Who died four years before his passing. He was survived by three sons Joseph G. Deponai a member of the Washington DC Chamber of Commerce. Albert J. Deponai also of Washington DC and John M. Deponai of the editorial staff of the Baltimore American.
