William H. Cole was born in Canada, and was a farmer.

He enlisted in the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers (USA) on June 20, 1864, and was mustered in on July 2, 1864, as a private, at Harpers Ferry. He deserted at Point of Rocks, Md. on Oct. 21, 1864, and was arrested by the Provost Marshall at Frederick Md. He later suffered a gunshot wound and was at the U.S. General Hospital at Frederick on Dec. 31, 1864, and he died on Jan. 7, 1865, at Frederick. As he was near death, he said his correct name was Elisha Curl. (Information from military service and pension records.)
