Mrs. Barksdale's exact name remains a mystery at this time. Various records show her name as Nannie Barksdale, Nannie G. Barksdale, Nannie Gail Caldwell, as well as Gail having the spelling of Gale. It is the "opinion" of this contributor based on the records uncovered up until this point her name was likely Nannie Gail Caldwell Barksdale. I came to his conclusion based on the 1900 census showing her name as Nannie G. Barksdale at age 22. It is unlikely that age 22 Nannie would be a nickname, but rather a given name at birth. Since birth certificates were not available at the time of her birth and births were usually recorded in the family bible, it is unlikely that we will ever know the correct name. Such is genealogy!
