She was born June 8, 1989, in Bemidji, MN the daughter of Marilyn Smith and William Butcher Sr. She was raised and educated in Ponsford, MN. She attended the Pine Point School from kindergarten until 7th grade. She moved to Red Lake in 2002. She attended the Red Lake Middle School for a year and was attending the Red Lake High School. She liked all her classes and loved spending time with her friends. She was very active in high school activities including being on the yearbook staff, and basketball cheerleading. Melissa was a fancy shawl dancer, and enjoyed attending pow-wows. She won the Nay-Ta-Waush Princess title in 2002. She was outgoing, energetic, and had a positive attitude towards everyone and everything.
