A Machesney Park man who was shot in the head as he started to teach his wife to use a gun died Wednesday morning at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

No charges are expected to be filed against Nancy Harty, 42, in the death of her husband Craig Harty, 44, both of 7400 block of Randy Rd, Winnebago County Sheriff Don Gasparini said.

"It's just an unbelievable tragedy, but it appears to be an accident, Gasparini said.

Nancy Harty told police the 22. caliber gun went off as her husband took it from her Monday morning.

Maj Larry Schultz said from her account Nancy Harty apparently had her finger inside the trigger guard as her husband took the gun by the barrel and pulled it toward himself.

Investigators could find no evidence of discord in the family, and neighbors described the family as "quiet" and "everyday people".

Harty, who died at 9:30 am is survived by a 23 year old daughter Stephanie Lynn Harty and a 19 year old son Shane.

He worked for 25 years for Ingersoll Milling Machine Co after moving to the Rockford area in 1963 from his native Aberdeen, SD.

Both his children were asleep in the home at the time of the shooting.

The family declined comment.

^^^ PLEASE NOTE: This article is incorrect with respect to the children Shane is 23 and Stephanie is 19 ^^^
