Just as we go to press we learn of the death of Levi Christ who lives on Pipe Creek. Mr. Christ was an old settler and highly esteemed.

In: Minneapolis Messenger, 1909.
Levi Christ (1840-1909) Born in Pa. and married Mary Jane Caldwell. Levi enlisted in the Union Army. In 1877, Levi and Mary moved their family to Kansas by covered wagon and homesteaded west of Lamar, KS. He farmed the land except when he rode the circuit as a Methodist minister. He was invited to preach at Wells, KS, the Messenger states "Rev Levi Christ came to preach and hold a revival". Frank Buell, the owner of the building, donated the use of the hall and furnished fuel and lights for religious services. Each night he sent his foster son, Cliff King, over 3 miles on horseback to build a fire and light kerosene lamps. It was very cold weather when the meetings began and for 3 nights, 3 boys were Rev Christ's congregation, but he preached and conducted the meetings as formal as if the hall were full, making a special effort to make the services interesting.
Besides the Wells church, he also served at Prairie Grove and other places. He officiated at 4 of his children's weddings; Henry to Mary Ellen Briggs, Ulysses Grant to Myrtle Daisey Patterson, Glen Ray to Maude Henry and Sylvia Rachel to Fred T Sclhotz.
The Methodist church was built in 1874 and damaged by the storm of July 10, 1879.

Levi & Mary Jane (Caldwell) were married on Nov 16, 1859 in Greenwood, PA. by Rev F.D. Gill. They had 10 children:
George Daniel, Sarah Ellen, Stephen Levi, Henry Elliott, Mary Sophronia, Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, Glen Ray, Sylvia Rachel & Hattie Lucinda.

Civil War Veteran, Union Army: Sgt., Co. I. 57 PA Inf. Member of the G.A.R.

Moved to Kansas in 1876: Occupation; Methodist minister and farmer.
