On Jan. 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Brother James Clayton Bays, a gospel preacher at the Broken Arrow Church of Christ. Two daughters and two sons were born to this union, Janis (Frank) Callaway and Janie Redfield, both of Smyrna, sons, Richard Bays of Bell Buckle and Billy (Jeannie) Bays of McDonough, Ga. Also surviving at the time of her passing were a sister, Hazel King of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren, Greg Callaway, Phil Redfield, Julie White, Brett Bays; and two great granddaughters, Stephanie and Monica White.
After 55 years of preaching, and living godly lives, they retired in Smyrna and lived on a farm, "Hayfork Farm," for several years.
Velara worked as a legal secretary for the Internal Revenue Service in the office of Regional Counsel for 17 years. Her husband, James Bays, became sick; and she cared for him for several years. He departed this life on Jan. 8, 1998. She remained in their home on Florence Rd., Murfreesboro, until she was no longer able to maintain a home. At that time she became a resident of Adams Place Assisted Living.
She was preceded in death by three sisters.
Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Bays to James C. and Velara Bays endowed scholarship fund at Freed-Hardeman University, Office of Financial & Estate Planning, 158 East Main St., Henderson, TN 38340.
Funeral services were held at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Brother Wayne Lankford and Brother Darryl Lewis officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
