Enrolled 29 April 1861 at Lynchburg, Tennessee as Private. Detailed on special duty with surgeon of regiment. Appointed to Medical Staff.

Attended Emory and Henry College, Virginia. Returned home to study medicine and attended one course of lectures in 1854-55 in the University of Tennessee. He graduated from the Louisville (Kentucky) Medical College in 1856 and began practicing his profession in Lynchburg.

During the war he was assistant surgeon of Turney's First Tennessee, and in 1862 was promoted to surgeon of the Eighth Tennessee continuing until near the close of the conflict when he was made medical director for the reserves of Tennessee.

After his return from the battlefield he resumed his profession in Lynchburg in which he has met with good success. In 1883 Dr. Dance opened a drugstore in Lynchburg. He was one of the stockholders of a cotton mill and also owned an interest in the grist mills of Dance and Waggoner at Lynchburg.

Charter member of The Lynchburg Male and Female Institute and The Lynchburg Normal School from 1870-1885. Trustee of the Lynchburg Methodist Episcopal Church in 1872.

A Tribute Of Respect upon his death was printed in the Nashville Christian Advocate on May 31, 1900.
