Court Maxwell, Local Merchant, Dies Late Monday
Court Maxwell, a 71-year-old retired Martinsville merchant, died
Monday evening at the Donna Nursing Home at Spencer at 11:35. He had been in failing health for the past eight years and had been in the nursing home since April 1.
He was the son of James H. and Anna Hastings Maxwell and was born
Jan. 18, 1890.
Mr. Maxwell, a lifetime resident of Morgan County, lived at 840 East
Pike Street, with his wife Clora Secrest Buchanan Maxwell whom he married in 1927. He was first married to Ethel Shireman who died in 1918.
An active person in organizations he was a charter member of the
Chamber of Commerce and was elected vice president when it was formed here in 1940. A year later he was named president of the organization and was a member of the board of directors from 1942 through 1955. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. for more than 35 years and served as a director of the Indiana Bank and Trust Company. He also served on the city council and hospital board and belonged to the First Christian Church where he was made a life-time elder some time ago. He was also a charter member of the Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Maxwell farmed until 1919 when bought the hardware interest of
Ora Abraham's store which was located where Hyatt's Automotive is at the present.
He joined with Harley Marshall in 1929 and formed a hardware store
where the A & P Grocery is now located and moved to the present location of the Maxwell Hardware store a short time later. He is a past president of the Indiana Hardware Association.
Two sons Paul Maxwell of Martinsville and Emmett Maxwell, Dallas,
Tex,. survive him. He also leaves two brothers, Forest and Harvey
Maxwell, and three sisters, Mrs. Forest Lake Monticello, Mrs. J.
B. Stine, Martinsville, and Anna Maxwell. Five grandchildren and
2 great-grandchildren also survive him.
Two sisters and a step-daughter, Maxine Buchanan, preceded him in death.
The Rev. Fred Sharp will conduct his funeral Thursday afternoon at 2
o'clock in the Cure and Hensley Chapel. Burial will be at Greenlawn
Cemetery.
