The Daily Notes, Canonsburg PA, Saturday 13 May 1933, front page - FORMER RESIDENT DIES EARLY TODAY -- Following an illness of 10 days MRS. MELISSA GUTHRIE VANCE of Washington died in the hospital there early this morning. She was born in Canonsburg, a daughter of ROBERT and ELLEN KERR GUTHRIE, May 4, 1871, and had lived here until 23 years ago when she removed to the county seat. Funeral services will be held at the late home of the deceased, 128 West Wheeling Street, Washington, Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, e.s.t., followed by interment in Oak Spring Cemetery here. She is survived by her husband, HARRY G. VANCE, and four children, MARY, wife of HENRY RUDY, CARL and GLADYS, at home, and HOWARD of Carnegie. One granddaughter, LAURA MARY VANCE, also survives. Mrs. Rudy taught in the Third ward schools here for 15 years. Mrs. Vance also leaves the following sisters: MRS. G. H. WILSON of Washington, MRS. IDA B. CLYDE of East College Street, MRS. THOMAS LOUDON of Elm Street, and MISS IRENE GUTHRIE of South Central Avenue.
