Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Sara Theresa Reed Ennis Lt.CDR USN (Ret), 89, of Camden will be held Monday, August 22, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Rite of Committal in Quaker Cemetery. Reverend Francis Travis will officiate. The rosary will be recited, Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 7:00 PM in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1709 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020 or to a community charity of one's choice.
Theresa as she was known to her friends passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2011. Born on February 18, 1922, she was the youngest and last surviving of thirteen children born to Nero and Nora Sheheen Reed. She was the last person born in Camden's Historic Douglas-Reed House, which is now occupied by the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. Theresa was a graduate of Camden High School where she starred on the school basketball team. Theresa later received her nursing training at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Following the attack at Pearl Harbor, Theresa volunteered for service in the Red Cross and United States Navy. She was called back to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War becoming an operating room chief nurse and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1960 she married Captain Henry "Russ" Ennis, a US Navy physician. After his retirement from the Navy in 1963, they moved back to Camden, where Dr. Ennis entered into private practice. Theresa was very active in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was an avid golfer, bowler, card player and gardener. Her home was noted for the large decorated butterflies that adorned her front yard. She especially enjoyed traveling around the country with family and friends and enjoying the fellowship of her large extended family.
She is survived by her step-son, Michael Ennis of Arlington, VA; step-daughter, Barbara Willens of Springfield, OH, granddaughter, Katherine Willens of Springfield, OH; grandson, Joel Willens of Hamilton Bermuda; son-in-law, Barney Willens and his wife Carolyn of Camden and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
