Miss Bruno was my 4th grade teacher, back in 1954/55 and I loved her dearly. She always cared so much about all of us and taught us well. Rest in peace, Miss Bruno.
Stella Theresa Bruno, former longtime resident of New Canaan, died at her home.
Miss Bruno, a retired school teacher who was among the leading parishioners at St. Aloysius R.C. Church for many years, was 102 years old.
She was born in Dasa, Italy, daughter of the late Theresa and Dominick Bruno, and came to New Canaan when she was five years old. Although accomplished in education, music and youth leadership, Miss Bruno often said that "one of my proudest days" was September 19, 1929, when she became a United States citizen.
After graduating from Stamford High School in the era before New Canaan had its own high school, Miss Bruno attended Danbury Normal School and became a teacher in 1923. In June 1947, she received her bachelor's degree at Danbury State Teachers College which, like Danbury Normal, was a forerunner of Western Connecticut State University.
After teaching in Manchester from 1923 to 1925, she taught in Springdale until 1972. During that time she received a master of arts degree from New Haven State Teachers College, now Southern Connecticut State University, in 1951 and sixth year certification for studies at Yale and Columbia universities.
In 1938, she was a summer counselor at the Audubon Nature Camp in Maine and two years later the New Canaan Recreation Department appointed her playground director at Mead Park. She also was a violinist in the old New Canaan Community Orchestra and was a Girl Scout leader there for 10 years.
In addition, she was the last surviving charter member of the original Court St. Aloysius of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. For many years, she supervised that organization's annual art and essay contests and scholarship award programs.
Surviving are two sisters, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Predeceased by brothers Ralph and Dominick Bruno.
