His father was born 10/12/1883 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He arrived in the U. S. around 1906. He married Gordon's mother, Annie Bannerman Coutts on 10/25/1907 in Erie County, Pennsylvania. He died at age 26 on 11/29/1910 (less than a month after Gordon Jr. was born) in Conneaut, Ohio after he fell from a crane into Lake Erie.
Following his father's death, his mother returned to Scotland with her children. By 1920, Gordon was living once again in Conneaut, Ohio, with his maternal aunt, Margaret "Maggie" Coutts Robertson. His sister remained in Scotland and was reared by their maternal grandparents, Alexander Coutts (b. 1851) and Isabella Fraser Coutts (b. 1854).
His mother remarried in 1922 to Peter McFarlane Campbell (1890 Scotland-1958 Canada). He had three half-siblings, including Alexander Peter Campbell (1923 Canada-1945 Burma, KIA) and Jean Coutts Campbell (1925-1972).
