Benjamin was the son of James S. Blackwell and Elizabeth H. Drake. He enlisted on 15 Aug. 1862 as a private in Company I, 14th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered in on 26 Aug. for a 3-year term. He was wounded at the Battle of Monocacy, MD, 9 July 1864 and died at the U.S. Army General Hospital in Frederick City, MD on 23 July.
