The couple had been married for 18 years and both of their children were still living.
Maud's mother Lucy died in December 1887 of breast cancer about a month after giving birth. John's mother,
Elizabeth Graffam, who had also lost her husband Clement in 1887 moved her family and John's together to raise her grandchildren in Portland.
Maud was the daughter of John W. and Lucy D. Graffam.
