Lucille Cochran Mayes Beasley
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Lucille Cochran Mayes Beasley, was born on July 23, 1920, in Chouteau, the daughter of James Hall Mayes and Sallie Pearl Cochran Mayes.
She passed away on Jan. 16, 2013, in San Diego, Calif.
She attended school in Ponca City, graduating in 1938 and received her bachelor's degree in education from Central State College in Edmond.
On July 3, 1942, she married Melvin Beasley in Oklahoma City. Melvin was in the Merchant Marines during WWII and Lucille followed him to duty stations in Tacoma, Wash. and Santa Catalina Island, Calif.
After the war, they briefly returned to Ponca City before deciding to settle in San Diego, Calif. in 1948. Melvin worked for Ryan Aircraft and Lucille taught school in Ocean Beach until they both retired in 1982. Although she taught other grades, her last few years were spent teaching Kindergarten.
Lucille was a member of First Baptist Church of San Diego, Calif. but most recently attended services at Emmanuel Baptist Church which was nearer her home. She and Melvin were active members of the San Diego Horseless Carriage Club and drove their antique cars in many parades and events.
She loved traveling, movies and shopping. While in Virginia during the Christmas holidays, she traveled to Charlotte, N.C., where she toured the Billy Graham Library and to Charleston, S.C. where she attended a Christmas concert at The Citadel. She was a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma as well as the Pocahontas Club.
She is survived by her sister, Virginia Martin of Vinita; three nephews, Garry Martin of Bristow, Va., Jimmy Powers and Don Powers both of Oklahoma City; two great-nephews, Joe Martin of Bristow, Va. and Michael Powers of Norman; and one great-niece, Melanie Powers of Oklahoma City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Mary Powers.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Ponca City. Service is under the direction of Trout Funeral Home in Ponca City.
