HELEN CATHERINE ("KAY") SWOPES March 28, 1947- January 21, 2013

Kay was born in El Paso on March 28, 1947, to Alice and Harry Wilson, the last of their six children, and died on January 21, 2013, at the age of 65. Because her next sibling was 12 years older at the time of Kay's birth, she became known affectionately to her five older brothers and sisters as "Kay baby" or "Kaybee" until she was well into adulthood.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Howard Carvajal, Sr., as well as by two brothers, Orin Wilson and Harry Edwin Wilson.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Dale; a daughter, Lori Swopes Hughes and husband, Keith; and by two sons, Paul Saunders; and Michael Swopes and wife, Nancy, all of El Paso. Also surviving are two sisters, Sue Shover of El Paso and Anne Smith of Conroe, S.C., and one brother, Eugene ("Sonny") Wilson of Roswell, NM. Two step-brothers, Bruce Carvajal of San Diego and Howard Carvajal, Jr., also survive her. Very precious to her were her six grandchildren, all of El Paso: Christian Hughes; and Amanda, Paul, Toby, Taryn, and Caitlyn Swopes.

Kay was educated in El Paso schools Rusk Elementary, Bassett Middle School, Austin High School and the University of Texas at El Paso. For 43 years, beginning in 1969, she was a church organist at different times for Grandview Baptist Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, Western Hills United Methodist Church, Manhatten Presbyterian Church; and most recently, at University Presbyterian Church for 19 years. She retired from UT El Paso in March 2009, and recently volunteered her time working for Hospice of El Paso. At her request and in lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the Rescue Mission of El Paso, the Animal Rescue League, the Music Ministry of University Presbyterian Church, or to a charitable organization of your choice.

A memorial service for Kay will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 pm at University Presbyterian Church, 244 N. Resler, El Paso, Texas.
