Ezra Algernon Jenkins of Lynchburg, VA departed this life January 21, 2013. He was born April 12, 1934 in Hodges Park, IL to the late Solomon James and Artie S. Eubanks Jenkins.

He attended and graduated from Sumner High School, Cairo, IL in 1952. After graduating from high school Ezra served his country in the United States Army for 28 years. His career included being a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He was also an Equal Opportunity Non-Commissioned Officer and Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor. He received the Master Parachute Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Dominican Republic), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device Army Commendation Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, Civil Actions Medal 1st Class, Good Conduct Medal, (8th award), Senior Crewman Badge, Staff Service Medal 2nd Class, Expert Qualification Badge Rifle M-16 and Legion of Merit. While in the military, Ezra received Management Development, Equal Opportunity Management and Organizational Effectiveness training. Ezra was employed at Owens Illinois, Georgia Pacific, and CB Fleet in Human Resource. He furthered his education and received a BS degree in Sociology from Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC and a MA degree in Human Resources from Weber State University (satellite campus) in Fort Bragg, NC. Ezra served as a faithful member of St. James CME church as Chairman of the Trustee Board, member of the Steward Board, Sunday School Teacher, and Usher. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his former wife, Shirley Jenkins (Lathan); a sister, Bertha Lee McDonald; four brothers-in-law, James Smith, Charlie Sanders, Charles Smith and Ronald E. Lathan; one sister-in-law, Ella B. Jenkins and one niece, Charise Bradshaw. Ezra leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted and loving wife of 39 years, Nettie M. Brogdon Jenkins; one daughter, Cheryl R. Jenkins of Hodges Park, IL; three sons, Gerald E. Jenkins (Ursula), Howard M. Streeter of Swansea, IL (Debra of Nashville, TN) and Armand S. Jenkins of Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren, DeShante L. Streeter of Chesterfield, MO, Howard "Kenny" M. Streeter, II (Tiffany) of Florissant, MO, Jordan T. and Jamie R. Jenkins of Swansea, IL; two great grandchildren, Tania M. and Takara L. Streeter of Florissant, MO; two brothers, Rev. Ivan O. Jenkins of Indianapolis, IN and Pastor Sumner W. Jenkins (Rochelle) of East Moline, IL; five sisters, Lois E. Smith and Z. June Sanders of Milwaukee, WI, Esther W. Smith of Truesdale, MO, O. Maxine Walker of Houston, TX and Lela O. Vaughn (Rev. Willie J.) of Detroit, MI; two sister-in-laws, Sara Williams (Augustus) of Sumter, SC and Willie Mae Green (Rev Willie) of Augusta, GA; adopted son, Rev. Keith Anderson (Renee) of Lynchburg; a vast number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, dear devoted and supportive friends, Rev. and Mrs. George Brown, and many friends. A funeral service will be held 11am, Saturday, January 26, 2013 at St. James CME Church. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Burial Park. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 16. The family is receiving friends from 7-8pm, Friday, January 25, 2013 at Community Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 306 Forest Dale Dr., Forest. The cortege will assemble at the residence. The family requests that in lieu of flowers make a donation to the building fund, St. James CME Church, 280 Rockwell Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24504.
