Charles T. Meloy, only son of C.J. Meloy deceased, passed away at Tucson, Arizona, Sunday Dec. 30, 1917 after a short illness due to meningitis and the remains were brought to his home in this city Thursday evening Jan. 3, 1918.
The deceased accompanied his mother to California about two months ago where they went to look after their orange ranch and also spend the winter in a milder climate. Some three weeks previous to his death they went to Tucson.
He was born in Shullsburg Sept. 25, 1884 and was graduated from our High School with the class of 1900, being one of the youngest to finish this course. Later he attended the University of Madison where he took up the Engineer's Course but owing to weak eyes was not permitted to finish it. His interest was always aroused by anything of a mechanical nature and he was one of the first here to own and run an automobile. He was a member of the Shullsburg Gun Club and one of its best marksmen. A member of the K.C's and also the Elks, taking an active interest in both as well as anything that he considered a benefit to humanity or the town. His thoughtfulness of the welfare of all in his company made him a favorite with his companions.
The funeral services were held at St. Matthews church Saturday morning Jan. 5, 1918 at ten o'clock. Solemn high mass was celebrated with Rev. Father Croke celebrant, Rev. Father McQuaid deacon and Rev. Father McGinnity sub deacon. The remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery by the side of his father.
The sympathy of the community is with the heartbroken mother who so sadly misses the care and companionship of a devoted son.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: H.V. Meloy uncle of the deceased; Judge and Mrs. Schaller and two daughters Josephine and Marian of Hastings, Minn.; Mrs. Winslow and daughter Elizabeth of Dundee, Ill.; and M.J. Naylor of Polo, Ill.
