Jazz Musician. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, as Thaddeus Joseph Jones, he became well-known during his long period (1954 to 1963) as a trumpeter with the "Count Basie's Orchestra". After 1962 he became a free-lancer arranger, and in 1965 he organized a big band with drummer Mel Lewis. During the next decade the orchestra became famous and gave Jones an outlet for his arranging and composing. In 1978 he left the band and moved to Denmark, where he wrote for and led the Danish Radio Big Band as well as his own group called "Eclipse". In late 1984 he took over the leadership of the "Count Basie Orchestra", but soon bad health forced him to retire.
