Former Augustan and Wife Are Found Dead in Cabin --
Couple Discovered in Gas-Filled Building By Operator of Baxley Tourist Establishment --

BAXLEY, Ga., Dec. 16. William H. Allen, about 35 years of age, and Mrs. Mary Allen, his wife, were found dead in a tourist cabin this afternoon, it was reported by Sheriff J. D. Wright. Papers on the dead man gave an Augusta, Ga., address.

The sheriff stated that an inquest was held tonight and the jury returned a verdict that the couple came to their death from an unknown cause, possibly suffocation.

Sheriff Wright stated that the operator of the camp, located just within the city limits there, informed him that the couple rented the cabin Monday night and left word not to be disturbed until late this afternoon. The sheriff said that the camp operator informed him there was a gas stove in the cabin and the couple had lighted it on going in. He said that when he went to the cabin about 4 o'clock and knocked on the door he received no answer. On forcing the door he found the cabin filled with gas.

The sheriff said that he was immediately called and found the same condition in the cabin as described by the operator. He said he believed that Mr. and Mrs. Allen went to sleep with the gas stove burning at full force and due to the fact that the cabin was airtight he believed the couple suffocated. They had, he said, been dead for several hours when the bodies were discovered. The sheriff stated that there were no mars of violence on the bodies.

Other identification papers gave an address as 91 Applton street, Boston, Mass.

Sheriff J. D. Wright of Baxley, contacted last night by The Chronicle, stated that letters on the person of William H. Allen showed that he had relatives at 1944 Greene street.

It was learned from Traffic Lieutenant Jack Hoover that Mr. Allen, who resided here until 1935, has a mother, Mrs. Leslie Allen, a former wife, Mrs. Hazel Allen, and two young daughters residing here.

It was also learned that Mr. and Mrs. Allen had been in Augusta Monday night. The couple stopped over to visit Mr. Allen's mother, leaving Augusta about 7 o'clock for Florida. It was understood that the couple followed hotel work and presumably were on their way to Florida for the winter hotel season.

The dead man was divorced from Mrs. Hazel Allen several years ago and left here for the north shortly afterward, it was stated. He had been coming to Augusta at various times since, it was said. He formerly worked at a local bakery.

It was stated that relatives would send for the bodies this morning.
