Dale owned and operated service stations in Oregon City for several years before entering the funeral business in 1955. He graduated from the Los Angeles School of Mortuary Science in 1956. He was associated with the Hillside Chapel in Oregon City and was employed by Edward Holman and Sons Funeral Service in Portland. He bought Luce Funeral Home in Astoria in 1959, changing the name to Luce-Layton Funeral Home, which he operated until 1979. He then retired to several positions working with young people and serving his community. He enjoyed fishing, clamming, and travelling.
Dale was pre-deceased by his wife Hilda in 1989, his second wife Elizabeth in 2005 and his son Robert in 2002.
Dale is survived by his daughter Rebecca Olson, her husband Michael of Astoria, a son Richard, his wife Bili of New Bern, NC, and a daughter- in - law Tina Russell Layton of Oregon City. He has four grandsons, Jon Layton of Los Angeles, CA, Tom Layton, his wife Danielle of Springfield, VA, Robert Layton and Christopher Layton of Oregon City and great grandson Andrew James Layton of Springfield, Va. Dale is survived by one brother Ernest of Aurora. Services will be held at the Oak Park Church of God in Salem on Friday May 25th at 11: 00 a.m. Burial with military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Tuesday May 29th at 12:00 noon. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
