William Riley Long was the 6th and last child of Henry Long(b. Apr 11 1782, Upper Mt Bethel, Northampton, PA; d.Feb 10, 1836) and Catherine Margaretha (Stump) Long (b.Dec 18, 1785; d.1883 in Lawrence county, KY). He was born in Greenup County, Kentucky. His elder sister was Elizabeth Stump Long(b.Mar 16, 1813; d.1891) On January 25 1853, William married Mary Elizabeth Blankenship in Greenup County, Kentucky. Unto this union was born 12 children; Mary Ann, Ezekiel Wesley, William Riley Jr., John Henry, Catherine Susan, Elizabeth Grace, Martha Frances, Naomi Foster (Find A Grave Memorial# 10356638), Joseph Richard, Blackburn White, James Edward and Ida May Long. William Riley Long was a private of Company E. 14th regiment Kentucky infantry volunteers and was enrolled on the October 13, 1861 at Ashland, Kentucky. He was under commander G. W. Gallup and discharged at Louisa, Kentucky on January 31, 1865. His personal description is given as height: 5 ft. 8 3/4 inches, light complexion with brown hair and hazel eyes. William Riley Long filed for homestead privileges in Finney County, Kansas and moved to his family there in the spring of 1890. He had a large family and he believed he could support his family on a 160 acre homestead by running beef cattle.
