Hobart Roosevelt "Shown" Dobbins was the child of Matilda Victory Cardwell Shown Dobbins Sawyers and Father was Oscar Dobbins whom she married in April 26, 1903 after her husband, Wesley Green Shown died in Nov. 1901. The date of Hobart's birth is 'murky' at best. It has been stated somewhere between 1899 - 1904. At best, the dates for 1899-1901 have been eliminated because Roy Green Shown was born in 1900-1901 and records indicate that Oscar Dobbins was still in Green, Tn and married to his first wife. The only possible dates would be 1903 or later. Therefore, either Matilda was pregnant before his parents were married in 1903 and his birth was in August 1903 or more than likely his DOB was 1904 which is still unproven.
Hobart was a jovial fellow and an avid 'story teller'. Hobart met and married Nettie Chapmon after Hobart's half brother, Roy Green Shown married Nettie's older sister, Elizabeth Chapmon. Hobart worked at various occupations throughout his life but the last position that he held was the night watchman for a tobacco warehouse in Reidsville, NC He was able to live there while he worked. Many at the warehouse appreciated Hobart being there to keep the building safe. Later when Hobart went to the nursing home for the last year or so of his life around 1983-1986 I went to visit Hobart and gave him my Daddy's hearing aides which were left in his belongings after Daddy died. I will never forget the look of amazement on Hobart's face and the tears coming down his cheeks when he found that he could HEAR so clearly for the first time in years. What a blessing and a joy it is to be able to share in someone's joy.
