World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Lancashire, England, he served as a Corporal signalman in C Company of the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, British Army. On April 25, 1915, during a landing on West Beach, Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey, the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, were met by deadly fire from hidden machine guns which caused a great number of casualties. Corporal Grimshaw was to maintain communications between the units which had landed, when he assisted other men, rushing up to and cut the wire entanglements which held up the advance under fire from the enemy. After overcoming extreme difficulties, they reached the upper cliffs, held the position and he continured to get his radio signals through. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was invested with his Victoria Cross on March 15, 1917. Remaining in the Army, he was commissioned an officer and was appointed the Army's Chief Recruiting Officer at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1934. He died in London, England at the age of 87.
