Cecil E. Bowman
Cecil E. Bowman, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
He was a resident of Greenwood.
He was born March 20, 1924, in Tompkinsville, Ky. He married Reba Wood on Aug. 12, 1946. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Gary Bowman of Greenwood and Don Bowman of Forest, Va.;
four sisters, Bert Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla., Laura Clayton of Webb City, Mo.,
Flora Bowman of Uba, Calif., and Ruth Clayton of Springfield, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
He was employed for 16 years by Ford Motor Co. in Indianapolis, IN...
as a machinist. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of Suburban Baptist Church in Indianapolis
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory,
Greenwood Chapel. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be
at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in White River Township.
Cecil is a veteran of WW II in Europe, having served with Pattons 3rdArmy in the 128 AAA Gun Battalion. Drafted at 19, Cecil Bowman received basic training at Fort Bliss in Texas. After maneuvers at Camp Forest in Tennessee, he was deployed to Bourmouth England. From there, he went to Normandy Beach only three days after the initial invasion on June 6th. Intense fighting characterized the remainder of his tenure. As a gunner for the 128th battalion attached to the 89th infantry division of the 3rd Army , commanded by General Patton, he was a recipient of 5 battlestars including: "The invasion of France"; " Central France"; "The Battle of the Bulge"; "The crossing of the Rhine" and "Central Germany". Cecil fought to divide Nazi forces at Bastogne, crossed the Rhine on a platoon bridge at Straussbourg,and met steady axis resistance while cutting through southern Germany .Through all this, In God's great mercy, he did not receive a scratch. 22 years later, he would receive Christ as Savior.
