Mildred Gardner Baughan
December 3, 1915 - March 14, 2011

Mildred Ann Gardner Baughan passed away on March 14, 2011, at age 95. Though she lived her final years in Birmingham, Alabama, she happily spent most of her life in Martinsville. She worked at DuPont during WWII, and later cared for young children in her home and the elderly as a private duty caregiver. A lifelong Baptist, she was a member of Liberty Baptist in Callands, Starling Avenue Baptist, and First Baptist in Martinsville, where she enjoyed the Placide Mitchell Sunday School Class and Circle 3.

Born in Callands on December 3, 1915, she was preceded in death by her parents, John Robert Gardner and Virginia Hundley Gardner; her beloved husband, Charles Burton Baughan, Jr; brothers Gilbert Shellhorse Gardner, John Cabell Gardner, and Morris Lynwood (Bill) Gardner; and sisters Virginia Gardner Joyce and Pauline Gardner Stultz.

Mildred is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Thomas Thweatte, III (Tom) and Pauline Baughan (Paula) Hawthorne of Roanoke, Virginia, and William Leary (Bill) and Jeane Baughan Stone of Birmingham; grandchildren Charles Thomas (Chuck) and Tracy Bowman Hawthorne of Roanoke, John Gardner and Elizabeth Buford Hawthorne of Durban, South Africa, Stuart Burton Stone of Birmingham, and Paul Gardner Stone of Auburn, Alabama; and great-grandchildren Charles Porterfield (Charlie) Hawthorne and Alexander Chilson (Alex) Hawthorne of Roanoke, Virginia. Mildred also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, March 18 from 6 until 7pm at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel, and there will be a Saturday crypt-side service at Roselawn at 11am. Pallbearers will be nephews Robert Lynwood (Bob) Baughan and Naham Peter (Skip) Sweet of Richmond, Virginia, Robert Lee (Bob) Joyce of Hampton, Virginia, Kurt Alexander Conger of Raleigh, North Carolina, Michael Eric (Mike) Conger of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and John Fowler of Southmont, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Martinsville, 23 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia 24112. Your kindness and sympathy will always be held in grateful remembrance by the family of Mildred Gardner Baughan.
