Veva Jean Wilkins Lively, 86, died on Nov. 14, 2012 in Houston, Texas. She was born Aug. 10, 1926 in Grapeland, Texas to John Allen and Ina Rogers Wilkins.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Aiken Harrison and husband Cruze of El Campo, Troice Lively Jenckes and husband Jesse of Houston; grandson, Jay Jenckes of Houston; stepgranddaughter, Dorena Harrison of El Campo; stepgrandson, Aaron Harrison and wife Lauren of Wharton; stepgreat-granddaughters, Katherine and Eden Harrison of Wharton; sisters, Bernice Bowley of Grapeland, Mildred Dickey and husband Loyd of Grapeland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Lee Lively; her grandson, Lee Howard Aiken; her brother, Jimmie Rogers Wilkins; and her parents.
Jean graduated from Grapeland High School in 1944 where she was a volleyball player. As a young woman she moved to Houston and began her career working for Battelstine's Department store.
On Nov. 12, 1944 she married Troy, her husband of 48 years. In 1955 they moved to El Campo to raise their family and eventually start a successful bookkeeping and accounting business. Jean also worked for Wendel Construction Company and El Campo Livestock Commission. After her husband's death in 1993, Jean moved back to her family's ranch in Grapeland, Texas.
Her list of community service includes First United Methodist Church in El Campo and Grapeland, working with the Elks organization alongside her husband, and serving on the board of Grapeland's Senior Citizen Center. Jean was devoted to her family.
Her family knows that her greatest accomplishments were quietly achieved in her home as she selflessly raised her two daughters and supported all of their school and after-school activities including being a leader of her daughters' Brownie and Girl Scout Troops. Many late night hours were spent at the sewing machine as she created a vast array of beautiful clothes not only for her daughters but herself. Jean also loved needlepoint and plastic canvas crafting. Jean was a life-long fan of Elvis Presley and a corner of her home in Grapeland was set aside to display her collection of Elvis memorabilia.
The family wishes to thank Jimmy and Janice Chambers for their special love, care and compassion while "Aunt Jean" lived in Grapeland.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bailey & Foster Chapel, 415 U.S. 287 in Grapeland on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, 3913 U.S. 287 in Grapeland with graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery in Percilla with Pastor Chuck Bratz officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jay Jenckes, Cruze Harrison, Mike Appling, Roger Dickey, Blake Dickey, David Wilkins, Aaron Harrison and Gary Glass.
