Farmington – Francine Lake Bergman, 81, of Wilton, died early Tuesday morning at the Sandy River Center in Farmington. She was born in Carthage, Sept. 9, 1931, a daughter of Irving and Vera Smith Lake. When Frances was very young, her mother died and her father later married Nellie Preston of Wilton.
In October of 1937, when Francine was six years old, she developed Polio and an interesting article was in the Wilton newspaper that follows: "Francine Lake was recently taken to Lewisont to attend a clinic at C.M.G. Hospital, and the doctors were much pleased with her recovery from infanitile paralysis, although she must be kept very still for sometime yet. She is obliged to wear a brace on one leg, and the brace was so much better than the doctors had seen, that they made inquiries about it and were very surprised to see that her father Irving Lake had designed and made it. Upon hearing that, they asked him to make thirteen sets for their use." At her age and after missing some schooling, she recovered well and was able to lead and active life.
Francine attended Wilton schools and later attended schools in Connecticut as well as Soule College and Tulane University in New Orleans. She was employed at G.E. in Bridgeport, CT for many years and later at Landis Construction and Mathes-Bergman Architects of New Orleans. She was a life-member of several organizations in Maine, New Orleans, and Florida.
In 1972, she married William E. Bergman of New Orleans and in 1978, they moved to Key Colony Beach, FL. They resided there for several years, taking many trips to places of interest. After her husbands, death, she moved to the Residence Inn of the Marriott Hotel in Weston.
Due to failing health, she came to Wilton in early September of 2012 and resided with her niece and nephew, Scott and Shellie Allen. In Dec., she was admitted to Franklin Memorial Hospital, and then to Sandy River Center, where she remained until her passing.
While in Maine, she received wonderful care at the home of her niece and nephew, and from the personnel at Franklin Memorial, Sandy River Center, and Beacon Hospice.
She leaves her daughter, Jan Mitchell of Phillips; a grandson, David Mitchell and great-grandson Lawrence Mitchell of IL; a step-son, William Bergman and a step-grandson, William E. A. Bergman of California; a half-sister, Joyce Moore of Livermore Falls; and a half-brother, Irving, Jr. of Wilton.
