He was the son of Amos S. and Dorothea "Dollie" C. Milliken Cone. He resided in Westfield, Massachusetts at the time of his death. He was killed in a railroad accident, involving railroad cars in North Adams, Massachusetts. He married, first, Viola Lydia Davis, on September 24, 1874 in Westfield, Massachusetts. He married, second, Etta E. Bates, on November 13 or 14, 1878 in Westfield, Massachusetts.

He was a brakeman for the railroad, and was crushed between cars in the Hoosac Tunnel running between North Adams and Florida, Massachusetts. His death was recorded in both towns (as well as in Westfield, where he lived).
