Martha Jane Keating was born In December of 1850, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, probably after her father was killed that year. She had two older brothers, John Richard Keating age 5 and James Wooten Keating age 3. Her widowed mother married Toliver F. Martin and the family migrated to the Rusk County area of Texas.
