ALMOST TWO YEARS IN ARMY, HE'S NOW MASTER SERGEANT

Russell J. Herrema, 22, has been promoted to Master Sergeat at Inglewood, Calif., according to a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Herrema, RFD No 1, Grandville. He is in the headquarters company of a coast artillery unit.

Master Sgt. Herrema enlisted in February of 1941, and received his basic training at Camp Haan, Calif. Since Dec 7 that year when he was on maneuvers, he has been stationed near Los Angeles.

After graduation from Grandcille High School he was employed by Grandville Star & Alliance. A brother, Maynard Herrema, left for Fort Custer Jan. 15.
------------
Because of being stationed in California, Russ met his wife Francis there, and she was a true California girl, hating the cold and snow of Michigan and could never live there. She drew him to California, which is where he worked and raised his family.

Russell was the son of Simon Herrema and Tillie Piersma Herrema.
He married Francis VanderKaay and they had 5 children.
