Sarah Jane Cunningham was born in Pinckneyville, Illinois in 1835 to Matthew Cunningham and Esther Little. Her parents both descended from family lines that came through Chester, South Carolina after originally coming from Northern Ireland. They were Scots-Irish.

Sarah Jane was married first to Samuel Gaston Andrews in 1851 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Samuel was wounded during the Civil War and died from his wounds after returning home. They had five children together.

She remarries in 1864, this time to Pliny G. Andrews--who is Samuel Gaston Andrews' first cousin. They live in Illinois until after 1880, when they move to Louisiana. Pliny and Sarah both live out their lives in Louisiana.
