Civil War Union Brevet Major General. An 1820 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he had a 45-year career of service in the United States Army. By the time of the Civil War he was Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th United States Regular Artillery. Promoted to Colonel of the 2nd United States Regular Artillery, he would command Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, and pass away there while on active duty in December 1865. On June 9, 1862 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "meritorious services". On December 10, 1865 he was brevetted Major General, US Regular Army for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He was the grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Lewis Morris.
