Richard "Dick" L. Burgess, of West Hills, CA, formerly of Plymouth, died peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on June 16.

Dick was born July 13, 1928 to Eldon S. Burgess and Dorothy Francis (Boutin) Peters, and was raised in Plymouth. He attended Plymouth High School where he was an outstanding basketball player, setting school scoring records and leading his team. He went on to play basketball for Boston University. He was also an avid sailor and sailed competitively for Plymouth Yacht Club throughout his youth, eventually having his name inscribed on the prestigious Plymouth Bowl.

Dick was drafted into the army during the Korean War and he volunteered for the Airborne. He excelled in the Airborne and was promoted to the rank of Corporal and the elite leadership position of "Jumpmaster." He was a proud member of the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. Dick went on to a long career at United Airlines in California.

He was a loving husband to his beloved wife Jean, father to Pamela, Beth, and Ted, brother to Eldon "Sonny" Burgess, Jr. Additionally, he leaves behind 5 beloved grandchildren as well as a niece and nephew.

Even after moving to California to work for United Airlines, Dick maintained a residence in Plymouth and always felt a strong love for the town, his friends, and family here.

Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 13, at the Chiltonville Congregational Church, Plymouth with burial to immediately follow in the Chiltonville Cemetery.
