Emma Alverda Elliott Boyer was born September 13, 1867, at Independence, Virginia. She was the daughter of Abram and Betty Barton Elliott and the oldest of ten children. She reared her brothers and sisters as her mother was often ill. The only remaining member of this family is Mrs. Mattie Long. Her sister of Sumner, Washington. Mother Boyer (as she was known) became a Christian when she was twelve. She remained a Christian the rest of her span of life - 64 years. She came to Battle Creek, Nebr. when she was 26 years old. Here she had a dressmaker's shop and followed her trade. Later the same year October 21, 1893, she became the wife of the late Robert Boyer, who preceded her in 1934. She was mother in deed to eight step-children: Mrs. Myrtle Wood; Mrs. Lalla Mickey or Huntington Park, California; Kyle Boyer deceased; C. F. Boyer; F. S. Boyer of Mullen, Nebr.; Tanner E. Boyer of Bell, Calif.; Virginia Boyer deceased; W. H. Boyer of Los Angeles, California. Their three children were Mrs. May Drake of Chautauqua, N. Y.; Thomas T. Boyer of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Beulah deceased.

Their two grandsons by birth and own sons by adoption; Kenneth Deets and Mervin Deets of Los Angeles, Calif. Both members of First Baptist Church. Her Grandchildren are 30 in number, five of who are in National Services. Her Great grandchildren number 23. Mr. and Mrs. Boyer were one of the first families to settle in the Sandhills of Nebraska near Mullen. They gave a corner of their homestead in Dry Valley for a Church Cemetery. A Church school was organized there by them and Mother Boyer was its Superintendent. It was known as the Dry Valley Methodist Church. They were Methodist until coming to Calif. and especially Maywood, whence they became members of First Baptist Church, almost immediately. That was 20 years. She was often found many miles from home, caring for the sick. At Mullen she also ran the Telephone Office. She was the organizer here in 1927 of the Emmanuel Boyer's Home at 3626 E 56th St, which she kept for four years. She was a teacher in our church school for many years, for a time teaching the Dorcas Class of our Adult Dept. of which she was member.

She has been a Deaconess for many years, and the only Honorary Deaconess we have ever had here. She was a Past President of the Women's Mission Society. She was also a Royal Neighbor at one time in the Woodman Lodge in Nebr. The Rev. A. John Northrop, Assistant pastor, First Baptist Church, 3753 E. 57th St. Maywood, Calif. preached the Sermon. The Text was taken from the following scriptures; Philipians 1:21; John 14th Chapter, Versus 1:17; John 11:25; 26; Job 19: 25, 27; Rev 14: 13; Lord's Prayer; 1 Corinthians 13th Chapter. The Soloist was Mrs. pearl Burrage. She sang "Sunrise", and "Teach Me To Pray"; The latter was Mother's favorite song.
