Bessie Ann Hill daughter of Odus Grant Hill and Florence Ann Brooks was born on a farm south of Nickerson, Kansas. She married James Paul Pitzer son of John Riley Pitzer and Annie Elizabeth Bower. Bessie and Paul had 9 children prior to his disappearance in 1938 while Paul was on a cattle buying trip. Nothing was heard of Paul after he disappeared and an extensive search was conducted. Bessie and her youngest children moved in with her parents after Paul disappeared. The older children lived with other Hill and Pitzer relatives. Bessie divorced Paul in 1956 after Paul had been missing for 18 years. She then married Arvil King, a widower with one son.
Her gravestone reads Bessie Pitzer King, mother of nine children. Five of which have passed away:
daughter Lorene Anna Pitzer Lewis,
Daughter Pearl Jaunita Pitzer Grant,
son John Odus Pitzer.
son James "Jim" David Pitzer.
