Alice Jean (Bottum) Kaye was born on March 28, 1932 in Wessington to Sheldon and Ellen (Ladd) Bottum. She grew up on a farm near Tulare and attended Redfield High School. She earned a teaching certificate from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1952, where she met and fell in love with her husband, the late Reverend John William Kaye, Jr, son of the Honorable John William Kaye, Sr. and Mary (Harvey) Kaye.
While she was waiting for the return of her soldier from the Korean Conflict, she taught in the Miller school system. She and Reverend Kaye were married on August 20, 1954, in Miller, and then moved to Denver, Colorado, where he attended the Iliff School of Theology. They served at his first church in Kit Carson, Colorado. This loving couple then moved back to South Dakota to serve together at the following churches: Plankinton, Kennebec/Reliance, Flandreau/Egan, McLaughlin/Mobridge, and finally to Artesian/Farwell. Alice Kaye was a supportive parent throughout her children's school activities, as well as a substitute teacher and speech therapist. She later moved to Dakota Wesleyan University to work in the Business Office and finally the office of Financial Aide where she retired in July 1999.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years and was involved with Sunday School, Choir, Circle President, and Quilting. She was a wonderful vocalist: she sang on radio broadcasts, at weddings and sporting events, and for funerals, but most of all for family enjoyment.
She is survived by her three older siblings, Helen Geraldine (Geri) Kasin of Wallace, Mildred Trongard of Grafton, Wisconsin, and Donald Bottum of Tulare. Her children, Jonathan and (Carol) Kaye of Sturgis; Heather Kaye of King George, Virginia; Rev. Dr. Creighton and (Rev. Karin) Kaye of Racine, Wisconsin, and Doctors Preston and (Liesl) Kaye of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, mourn her loss and celebrate her life. Her grandchildren are Chris Kaye of Sturgis; Angi and (Kal) Varland of Lead; Cara Kaye of Spearfish; Séann Floyd of Ruther Glen, Virginia; N. Cordai Floyd of King George, Virginia; Pierson, Maddie, and Sawyer Kaye of Racine, Wisconsin, and Jonathan, Daniel and Lillia Kaye of Lake in the Hills, Illinois. Her great-grandchildren are Kayden Varland of Lead; Kyleigh and Isaiah Miller of Ruther Glen, Virginia; Avry Whistler of Spearfish, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her parents-in-law after a short battle with cancer.
