On 27 April 1861 he joined Company H of the 15th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He was sent to the hospital in Williamsburg in July. He was absent, sick, from June 1862 to September 1864. He had small pox. He became a nurse in the small pox hospital. On May 9, 1864, he was listed as Ward Master at Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond. He returned to regular duty in October and was assigned to guard the government mills in Petersburg.
