Al was the son of Albert F and Esther (LaChance) Kessel and was married first to Bette, who died in 1995, and then to Colette, who survives.

Mr. Kessel founded the largest grocery chain in the Flint/Saginaw/Bay City area of Michigan (1981). This chain included about 2000 employees and 24 stores before selling 20 of them to Kroger in 1999. He also served as co-principal owner of the Pet Supplies Plus chain stores. Prior to his own supermarket chain, he was Executive Vice President of Hamady Brothers Supermarkets and was a part of various other grocery chains including Spartan out of Grand Rapids, Giant (PA)

His catch phrase at the end of every TV commercial for his stores was "We're With You".


Al loved to golf and was a member of many charities (board).

He died of esophageal cancer.

His parents are buried in St. Patrick's cemetery in Bay City.
