On November 2, 1876, Sam married Amanda Jane Cowart, who was born April 2, 1856 in Rome, Georgia (Floyd County), daughter of Jonathan Cowart (1831- ) and Martha Adeline White (1835- ).
Sam and Amanda had eight known children: Thomas M. Roberts (1877-1877); Charles Arthur Roberts (1878-1946); Henrietta Elizabeth Roberts (1881-1953); Susie Ella Roberts (1882-1951); Cynthia Ophelia Roberts (1885-1885); Myrtle Mae Roberts (1886-1980); James Willie Roberts (1888-1951); and Sarah Edna Roberts (1891-1977).

Living with them were five children: Henrietta, a saleslady, age 26, born in Tennessee; Susie E., age 24, born in Tennessee; Myrtle M., age 22, born in Arkansas; James W., a grocery salesman, age 20, born in Arkansas; and Sarah E., a saleslady, age 18, born in Arkansas.
Amanda died April 18, 1929 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in Highland Cemetery. Sam died in 1939 in Durant and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside his wife.
