Known as Jean, was christened "Janet Smith Green McLelland" and was the daughter of David McLelland and Jane (Turnbull) McLelland, born is Scotland. Jean was a "home child" sent to Canada at the age of 12 to perform domestic labor with Barnardos Children's Home.
She married Frank Kirk in Canada in 1917 and moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1919. They had four children.
