Lee was born to George H. Ferris and Mary Johnston Ferris in his parent's rural home near Archer. His siblings were Maude, Ora, Mamie and younger brother, Lisle. Lee attended elementary school at District #23, the Nebraska Central Academy in Central City and the St. Paul Business College. He also attended the College of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska. He married Evaline Alice Hathaway on June 19, 1912. To this union were born the following children:

Vivian Ferris (Mrs. Sander)
George H. Ferris &
Iris Ferris (Mrs. Metz)
