Ping Leong was born on July 24, 1922 and passed away on December 2, 2012. Ping was a resident of Stockton, California.
He was born in Guangdong, China and came to the United States with his brother King to work as a young man at the age of 15 years old. They both saved their money to opened up a grocery store. In 1948, Ping went back to China to marry Mee Fong . After returning to the United States, they had their first son Stephen in 1949 in Casa Grande, Arizona. Later in 1950, Ping and his family moved from Casa Grande because it was too hot and settled in Stockton, California to be near cousin May Huey. Ping began work in 1950 as a butcher at Centro Mart and soon had another son Ronald, soon to follow with Joanne, Diane and Donna.
He opened his own grocery store Sonora Market in Stockton in 1957 till he retired in 1986. He never missed a day of work to illness and never complained about any aches or pains. Ping enjoyed retirement with trips to China, Canada, and New York. Most of all, he enjoyed family times, holiday gatherings around the dinner table, sitting back to watch the hustle and bustle of family. He was a social man to take his daily trip to the local mall, not to shop, but to meet up with his retired friends at the Sherwood Mall in the food court to chat. As often as he could, he would be on his stationary exercise bike, read three newspaper, The Stockton Record, Wall Street Journal, The Chinese Time, and read the Time Magazine. He was content being at home to watch the news to keep up with current events which he was able to have engaging conversations and always willing to have a debate with you.
During the past few years, his health declined due to normal aging. He was a brave man to face challenges without complaints and was able to see all his children married and to see his grandchildren Kelly Leong Mao and Shawn take their path in life and to be able to enjoy his great grand children Alison and Jackson.. We will miss him dearly and want to thank everyone who shared a part of his life. God Bless Ping in his peace.
