Josephine's parents were both born in Norway. She was baptised on July 1, 1883 in the Lutheran Church in Hartington, Cedar, Nebraska where she grew to adulthood.

She married Ole Gustav Brevig on June 28, 1902 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. They had two daughter and three sons in the following birth order: Odelia "Delia" Matilda, Lloyd Elwood, Gladys Viola, Vernon Kenneth, and Merle Odean.
