His parents were Homer Brainard (1820–1859) & Jane E Clark Brainard (1828–??)

Civil War Service - He enlisted Jan 22 1863 Age 18. He joined Co E, Ohio 2nd Cavalry Regiment on 22 Jan 1863 as a Private. He mustered out with the Company on 11 Sep 1865 at Benton Barracks, St Louis, MO.

He married Samantha Streeter on Mar 10 1870 in Mahoning County, Ohio. The couple lived in Youngstown where he was a railroad brakeman.
He married Susan Hackman Ehrman on Jan 30 1879 in Uniontown, Dauphin, Pennsylvania. In 1880, living in Collinsville, PA, he was a railroad engineer.

His wife filed for a widow's pension on Feb 22 1895 which was granted - cert # 431029
