IRONWOOD, Mich. - Anthony "Tony" Michaels, 91, of 212 E. Michigan Ave., Ironwood, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, with his family by his side.

He was born May 13, 1921, in Ironwood, son of the late Samuel and Helen (Satut) Michaels. Tony attended Ironwood schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School with the class of 1940.

He volunteered on Aug. 26, 1942, into the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Division, serving in the Asia Pacific theater during World War II, earning the rank of staff sergeant, before being honorably discharged Sept. 21, 1945. He then worked in one of the country's first supermarkets in Philadelphia before returning to Ironwood to help with the care of his parents. He worked for Walter Meyer Sausage Co. for many years as manager of the Ironwood plant. He then entered the motel business, first in a partnership with his sister Tena (and Russ Nelson) in the Cedars Motel in Ironwood, then as sole owners of the Travelers Motel in Bessemer with his wife Gertrude, which, after operating for many years, they sold and retired.

On Aug. 15, 1953, he was married to Gertrude Kovacevich at St. Simon Orthodox Christian Church in Ironwood, by the Rev. Nickanor Kollick. Gertrude preceded him in death on Dec. 24, 2010.

Tony is survived by his daughter, Joanne Michaels, of Ironwood, and his two sons, Bishop Anthony "Rick" Michaels, Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo (Ohio) and the Midwest, and Craig (Vicky) Michaels, of Apple Valley, Minn.; three granddaughters, Rebecca Michaels and Jennifer (Joel) Kangas, both of Apple Valley, and Mary Cotie, of Plano, Texas. Also surviving are his sister, Marjorie (Dale) Frei; his brother, Richard (Julie) Michaels; and many nieces and nephews.

Anthony was also preceded in death by his brothers, John in his childhood, George and Mike. Also, preceded in death by his sisters, Amena Rados, Tena Nelson and Rose Karna.

Funeral services will be held at St. Simon Orthodox Church, 226 E. Harding Ave., Ironwood, on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. with Bishop Anthony Michaels, celebrant.

Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Trisagion Prayers (memorial prayers) will be recited at 7 p.m.

burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
