Lula A. Lakeman, 87, entered the gates of heaven into an eternity of peace and love, May 21, 2005. She battled cancer for a short time before entering heaven. Her passing was a great loss to her dear family and friends, but we take comfort in knowing she is at rest with our Lord. She was born April 25, 1918, in Medway, where she lived many years of her life, the daughter of Myra Lyons and George Lyons. She attended school at Baxter School for the Deaf in Portland, where she graduated from high school.
She is the last of her family to leave this world. In addition to her mom and dad, she was predeceased by her husband, Willis L. Lakeman Sr.; her brothers, Harold, Rudolph, Paul, Darrell and George Lyons.
She is survived by three sons and their wives, Bob and Mae Lakeman of East Millinocket, Gary and Evie Lakeman of East Millinocket, Mickey and Ellen Lakeman of Medway; and two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Chuck Cameron of Bangor and Tammy and David Madore of East Millinocket; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; her dear friends, Betty Perry of Brewer and Lorraine Merritt of East Millinocket; and sister-in-law, Carmine Lyons of East Millinocket; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Lula was a very special person. She was born deaf, the third of six children born deaf in her family. She never let this be a disability. She was very independent. She worked at Millinocket Regional Hospital from February 1976 to May 1980 at which time she retired. During this break, she spent time with her grandchildren. She missed the people at the hospital and returned to MRH in June 1982 and worked until November 1985. She learned how to drive during her years at MRH so she didn't have to depend on her husband to take her back and forth to work.
She loved God with all her heart and every night she would pull out her little bible and prayer cards her Mother helped her write and religiously read and pray. No matter how tired she was, or even if she dozed off, she always said her prayers and read her bible before turning in for the night.
Interment will be in the East Millinocket Cemetery. (Bangor Daily News 5/24/2005)
