Alfred Donald SHEWAN was born 3 October 1895 at 1:30 pm at 6 Bayton Terrace, Granton Road, Leith, Scotland. His father, Robert Donald SHEWAN, was a master gardener.
In an 1914 attestation of Lowland (City of Edin), no. 369, for Alfred Shewan, Coprs (Heavy Battery and Artillery R.G.A.) it states he was from the parish of Granton, Town of Edinburgh, county of Midlothian. Age 18 years 5 months, trade Engineer for Bruce Peebles Co, Leith -- an apprentice, unindentured. Residence : 141 Granton Rd., Leith. Unwed. (The medical report indicates he was 5 feet 4 3/4 inches tall.) An Active Service card indicates Alfred Shewan with 1/1st Lowland (O of E), R.G.A. Heavy Battery, number 369 embarked in Southampton on 15-2-16 and disembarked in LeHavre 16-2-16. His Military History Sheet indicates he served with the Brit. Exped. Force 15-2-16 to 7-10-18, in the UK from 8-10-18 to 22-10-18 and in France from 23-10-18 to 14-6-19. He returned home 16-6-19. He was awarded the T.F.W. Medal. His next of kin was Robert D. Shewan, father, 141 Granton Rd. Leith. Another sheet in Alfred's military record states that on 15-3-19 he was posted to 179 Sq Btn. On 18-4-19 he was posted ot 1/1st Lowlands Heavy Btry and on 10-6-19 he was sent to Duddingston for Release. On 10/6/19 Alfred Shewan, Gunner, Regtl. No 307115 with the Heavy Battery 1/1st Lowland C of B., R.G.A. was examined and declared free from any disability due to his military service. Less than a month later, on 7-7-19 he was with B.T. in France & Flanders.
On 14 February 1923, Alfred Donald SHEWAN, a mechanical engineer, bachelor, age 27 of 141 Granton Road, Leith, son of Robert Donald Shewan, gardener, deceased and Jane ms Aiken, and Jane McDonald Milne INGLIS, clerkess, spinster, age 23 of 71 North Fort Street, Leith, daughter of Charles Robertson Inglis, butcher's manager and Margaret Johnstone ms Sandilands were wed at Kinnairds Hall, Leith according to the Forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. Witnessed by Ethel Inglis, 71 North Fort Street and William Auld 86a Great King Street.
Twelve days later, on 26 February 1923, Alfred Shewan, age 27, unaccompanied, arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Occupation Engineer. Birthplace Edinburgh, Religion Presbyterian. Destination: uncle, Alexander Aitken in Hawksburgh, Ontario. Intending to remain permanently. When his wife arrived in June, Alfred was in Peterburgh, Ontario. Shortly thereafter the couple moved to Montreal, Quebec where, in October 1925, five days after the birth of their firstborn Robert, Jane died.
On 20 Jun 1926---nine months after Jane's death---30-year-old widowed Alfred Donald Shewan arrived in Quebec City from Scotland. He was a mechanic. Next of Kin in Scotland: [infant] son---Mr. Robert SHEWAN c/o Ingles 71, North Fort Street, Leith. (It is believed Alfred went to visit his infant son who had been sent to live with his grandmother in Scotland.)
In April 1927, a year and a half after Jane's death, Alfred married Alice Kelly in the parish office of Saint Patrick's Church, Montreal, Quebec. They had one daughter, Patricia Shewan. The couple moved to Rawdon, Quebec in 1955. Alfred died at age 81 in St Mary's Hospital, Montreal Quebec on 14 June 1977 and was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal in Section G 1785 - S.
